Following a $5 million upgrade, this landmark hotel, once called the Copthorne and erected at the beginning of the 19th century, has been modernized with all the amenities and services you'd expect of highly rated hotels. Technically just off the boundary of the Merchant City and adjacent to Queen Street Station (where trains for Edinburgh and the north of Scotland terminate), the hotel has a conservatory space for dining and drinks. It faces onto the city's central plaza, George Square, and offers views of the opulent Glasgow city chambers. The best units are at the front of the building, as well; those in the rear offer no views worth writing home about.

The ground-floor restaurant, Brasserie on George Square, offers an elegant, neocolonial -- but not stuffy -- dining ambience, while the hotel's more recently recast Georgics bar has an excellent selection of wines, many served by the glass.
