Set within a sinuously curved building that straddles a landscaped 3-hectare (7 1/2-acre) beach, the posh and elegant Calabash is one of the leading boutique hotels on Grenada, even though the Spice Island Inn surpasses it in style and cutting-edge amenities. Everything is refined and low key -- nothing splashy. It occupies an isolated section of L'Anse aux Epines (Prickly Bay) 8km (5 miles) south of St. George's and only minutes from the airport. Foremost among the multitude of shrubs here are the scores of beautiful calabashes (gourds) for which the resort was named. The eight private plunge-pool suites and 22 whirlpool-bath suites all have verandas and either one king-size bed or two double beds.
