This discovery is 2km (1 1/4 mile) north of the center of Harvestehude, a highly desirable if somewhat out-of-the-way address for a little hotel. Small scale, charming, and well able to shelter its guests from Hamburg's street life, this bijou-style hotel was a posh private home in the 1890s and then fell into disrepair in the early 1970s when it became a shelter for the indigent. Today, it's a plush, smart hotel with decor and ambience that recall an English country house. Rooms are cushy, conservative, and rich looking, in tones of green, red, and yellow. Some units have four-poster beds, but these must be requested in advance. Antiques, including pieces of mahogany and cherrywood, are scattered about, and a trio of suites have their own private conservatories. All the neatly maintained bathrooms come with tub/shower combos.
On-site is the restaurant Prinz Frederik, open Tuesday to Saturday from 6 to 10:30pm, with five tables and room for just 18 diners at a time. It charges 30€ to 36€ ($39-$47) for main courses and serves a French/German/Continental cuisine.
