Pronounced "Zahn Shoe," this hotel was originally a French government building, and the 100-year history and columned facade lends character to the place. Best is the location, just a short walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, in the heart of the French district. Rooms all have high ceilings and are spacious but not luxurious at all (and some a bit musty). Deluxe rooms are the best value and large enough for a game of racquetball. Bathrooms are large and clean but have little counter space. The hotel has plenty of services: a travel counter, car rental, an affordable restaurant, and a popular massage and sauna area. A long, common balcony overlooks the courtyard and active street scene below. Rooms could do without the polyester bedspreads, not to mention the noise from many big groups that stay here, but for history, character, and convenience, this place is a great value. The lunch buffet is a virtual giveaway and not a bad meal.
