The Daewoo is the city's most popular supersize compound, and the top choice in recent years for heads of state and dignitaries (with a long list including President Clinton and Jiang Zemin). Everything is done large -- the hotel lobby, the bars, the rooms with king-size beds, and the 80m-long (262-ft.) curving pool. All interior space is tessellated in marble, deep-toned wood, or sumptuous fabrics. The plush rooms are decorated with local accents, and 1,000 interesting modern works of Vietnamese artists grace the walls. Overlooking the large park surrounding Thu Le Lake, the Daewoo is like a city unto itself. For dining, Edo (Japanese) and La Paix (Italian) are among the best restaurants in Hanoi -- both are formal, expensive, excellent power-lunch spots with private rooms. Café Promenade features Asian and European buffets, and Silk Road offers fine Chinese (Cantonese and Szechuan) food. The Daewoo is far from the town center, but the many amenities make it sufficiently self-contained. Facilities: 4 restaurants; 2 bars; outdoor tennis court; elegant health club; spa; Jacuzzi; sauna; family play program; concierge; tour desk; car rental; business center; shopping arcade; salon; room service; massage; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning; Internet
