Not to be confused with the famed "Hanoi Hilton" that housed American POWs, the Hilton is a reproduction colonial that describes an elegant arc around the perimeter of the splendid Hanoi Opera building. The inside matches the fine facade, with a lobby showcasing up-and-coming Vietnamese artists (Nguyan Tuan Ngoc was on display at time of writing) done on a grand scale. Rooms are carpeted in rich, contrasting colors with unique cushioned wallpaper, subdued lighting, and faux Chinese lacquer cabinets. Rooms on the fifth floor have balconies. The hotel also has plenty of special features for vacation travelers, including in-house tour services through Exotissimo (www.exotissimo.com) and a helpful concierge. You'll find fine Vietnamese dining at Ba Mien, and gourmet sandwiches and baked goods at Café Opera. Hotel breakfasts are tops, and JJ's Sports Bar is a good place to catch up on scores or play a game of pool. The courtyard pool is always a couple degrees coolor than the stuffy Hanoi air and overlooks the nearby Opera House.
