The folks at the Hotel Nikko take care of the most discerning of all international visitors: the high-powered Japanese businessman. As a result, the place has every detail right -- an immaculate, modern, streamlined design throughout, rooms so tidy you could eat sushi right off the floor, and comfort at a premium. Dining outlets are superb. It is a business hotel, but we include it here for the discerning travelers who like their accommodations peppered with a little bit of Wabi Sabi: the Japanese way of precision, quiet, and emptiness (with a little bling-bling thrown in). Nikko is located on the north end of sprawling Thong Nhat Park (formerly Lenin Park) overlooking Bay Mau Lake, a good distance south of the busy tourist area of Hanoi, but that might be one of the hotel's greatest assets. They have good live jazz performances regularly in their lobby lounge.
