New on the scene in Hanoi, the Majestic Salute is the flagship of the A-Z Salute Café empire -- a little street-side traveler cafe that's grown in increments over the years to own guesthouses, a minihotel, and now this midrange venture. The Majestic's lobby has a funky 1960s retro feel, the kind of place where Austin Powers might feel at ease after a night at the clubs. Rooms are large and cozy, a basic high-end minihotel standard. The thin office-style carpeting in both public and private spaces is unfortunate, but some rooms have neat anterooms and are quite spacious. The hotel is just north of the main action in the Old Quarter, with entrances onto both Hang Duong, a street that becomes a walking district on weekend nights, and Cha Ca Street (near the popular restaurant Cha Ca La Vong, a Hanoi institution). Double-glazed windows throughout the hotel mean that though the hotel is sandwiched between some of the Old Quarter's busiest (honk-honk) streets, rooms are quite quiet.
