The massive Windsor Plaza is a good distance from the heart of the city, but it's smack in the center of Greater Ho Chi Minh City (District 5) -- the developers reckon that over time the city center will come to them. This new behemoth rises from the base of an enormous, low-end shopping compound, and contains extensive food and beverage outlets, a two-story nightclub, casino, karaoke lounges, and a massage facility fit for hundreds. The modern pleasure palace and shrine to excess is a bit much really.
But for the hotel's current focus -- regional businesspeople and investors from neighboring countries -- the Windsor offers a comfortable and affordable standard. Suites are over-the-top, some quite gaudy even, but room facilities are tidy -- the one red-velvet-lined Chinese suite is enough to make you giddy. Standard rooms are done in plain tile with carpet and have dull built-in cabinets and oversize lacquer painting on the walls. Regular shuttles run to the Dong Khoi area, and the hotel can gladly arrange a car or a day tour of the city.
