What we have here may be the perfect marriage of old property and new owners. It's too early to tell for certain because, as of press time, the hotel is still closed for renovation. Before the purchase, this was the Warwick Hotel, which, in the '60s, was the hotel in Houston. The hotel was owned by John Mecom, an oilman who was exceedingly fond of the color powder blue, which became known in Houston as "Mecom blue." This was the predominant color of the hotel and, combined with a strange mix of '60s modern and traditional French furniture, made for an accidental funkiness that was amusing and would have been even more so had it not been altered by later renovations. Enter the new owners, who made their first property, Hotel ZaZa in Dallas, not only luxurious, but a fun hotel to stay in by being playful with colors and textures and going for a chic campy look. The Houston property, in the middle of the Museum District in the greenest part of the city, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2007. I only hope that they find a way to incorporate Mecom blue into the color scheme.
