This is the most elegant heritage property in its price category in Jaipur, offering excellent value for money, and in slightly better condition than Narain Niwas. Built in 1892 and still owned by the Kachchwaha clan of Rajputs, it has all the traditional elements of Rajput architecture -- scalloped arches and pretty cupolas, painted ceilings and colored glass windows, and a maze of corridors and stairs around and through inner courtyards. Rooms vary in size, but all are furnished with antiques and the block-printed fabrics typical of the region, and most have a padded alcove area for lounging. The only drawback is that some of the mattresses are a tad soft. You can take tea around the pool, or retreat to the tables on the lawn for total peace. The lounge is beautifully furnished, but it is the dining hall that sets the place apart: Unlike the oppressive rooms so typical of heritage properties (like the much-vaunted Samode Haveli), Alsisar's is filled with light, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling glass walls and spotless white tablecloths. The food is quite satisfactory, albeit not particularly memorable; breakfast will run you Rs 275 ($6.70/£3.40), while lunch and dinner (both buffets) costs Rs 400 ($9.75/£4.95) plus taxes.
