This is one of the genuinely respectable old-time hotels of Ocho Rios, the one most often selected by local churches or charity organizations as a site of their meetings and conventions. The original opened in 1955 long before the slicker, glossier (or more naked) resorts of town. After years of decay, it was recently restored and redesigned, although touches of its former dowdiness remain. It still is imbued with such a traditional Jamaican format you might find it endearing. There are even vague hints of old-fashioned British/Jamaican hospitality from the colonial era. The hotel lies on a private white-sand beach about 457m (1,500-feet) long, opening onto Cutlass Bay and bordered on the east by White River. Almond trees, palms, and lush tropical plants adorn the 8.9-hectare (22-acre) gardens. All the midsize accommodations are well appointed and attractively furnished with soft tropical hues. These rooms and suites are housed in three low-rise buildings. You dine alfresco on the Palm Terrace or else more elegantly in the Palm Room Gourmet Restaurant, enjoying a first-rate Jamaican and international cuisine.
