Designed by one of Israel's foremost architects, the Regency (opened in 1987) was considered one of the city's finest hotels. Set on the lower slopes of Mount Scopus, the hotel's seven arcaded courtyards and multilevel atrium lobby settle gracefully across the landscape, with marvelous vistas of the city in the distance. The immediate neighborhood is not interesting for strolling, but a free shuttle bus takes you to downtown West Jerusalem. Room decor is wearing thin, but the basic design of the hotel is daring and tasteful. The fitness center is among the best in town; the swimming pool is roomy, although not very deep, and often loaded with outsiders. In 2001, the Israeli minister of tourism was murdered in this hotel, which caused tourists and Israelis to shy away for a number of years. Rates are comparatively low for what you get; look for discount deals.
