A stay at this historic building is one of the city's highlights. Lying inside the walls of the formidable 18th-century St. George's Castle (Lisbon's first royal palace), this hotel is reached only on foot because vehicles are off-limits. Some of the medieval architecture remains, such as an old cistern, part of the original palace. Although the building is antique, the bedrooms are in a high-quality contemporary design, mixing old elements such as original stone fortifications with contemporary fabrics and furnishings. Each room comes with a balcony overlooking a picture-perfect courtyard.
