Travelers often find their way to this rambling hotel on the recommendation of former guests, many of them in the fashion world, who tend to rave about the friendly service (Jerry at the desk lived in New York City until the age of 10), pleasant accommodations, and excellent value. Downstairs, there's a cheerful lobby and bar area furnished with multicolored couches that overlooks Piazza Oberdan and the public gardens. Upstairs, the spacious rooms are outfitted with comfortable rattan furniture painted burgundy and/or cream. Bathrooms are spacious and nicely maintained. Rooms in the back, overlooking a drab narrow alley between buildings, are considerably quieter (but less well-lit) than those on busy Corso Buenos Aires and Piazza Oberdan -- double glazing helps, but can't entirely mask the noise. However, I'd still ask for no. 222 or 332, which sit at the narrow end of the building and as such are quite large, with windows on three sides and small balconies. The name comes from the 19th-century masterpiece, The Betrothed by Lombardian novelist Alessandro Manzoni, set in nearby Lake Como.
