If you enjoyed your tour of Varenna's lush gardens, there's no need to leave. This 16th-century villa and several outbuildings were converted to a hotel in the early 1800s; it's now geared to conferences but takes other guests as well, space permitting. Though the rooms have been renovated without any attempt to retain historic character, they're extremely large and attractive. Suites take advantage of the high ceilings and contain loft bedrooms, with sitting areas below that can easily fit a couple of single beds for families. Although not every room gets a lake view, all save a few small ones on the roadside enjoy marvelous views over the gardens, which you can also enjoy on the delightful terraces. There are plans to add air-conditioning at some point. Ten rooms on the top floor have lake views and high ceilings decorated with molded stuccoes -- the best is the corner suite, with a coffered ceiling, alcove bed, four windows, and a nonworking fireplace. There are five more accommodations in a 15th-century building on the property.
