A variety of lodgings are on offer at this property occupying 18 acres overlooking Long Island Sound. At the crest of the hill, a 1904 Classical Revival mansion has public rooms as grand as the exterior. Bedrooms there are humbler: antique furniture mixed with merely old stuff, but many have four-poster beds and some have whirlpools. Porches and decks take in both sunrises and sunsets. Down the hill is the intimate Gate House, similarly accoutered. A number of rooms are in a separate motel-style building and are worn but serviceable. The complex also incorporates the restaurant Flood Tide (tel. 860/536-8140), with an exhibition kitchen containing a wood-burning grill and brick oven. It's open daily for all three meals and afternoon tea. The dining rooms look out over the sound, so ask for a table by the window.
