Some hotels have more comfortable rooms, others have better service, but few can match the all-around hipness of SoHo's 60 Thompson. A magnet for downtown celebs, 60 Thompson provides some excellent people-watching opportunities in the Thom Bar and the gorgeous rooftop bar, A60. The chic, soft-toned accommodations, designed by the same designer who did Giorgio Armani's Central Park West apartment, are spacious but spare, while bathrooms are enormous and luxuriously coated in Italian marble. The hotel has 11 suites including the magnificent Thompson Loft, a duplex penthouse suite with amazing views, four-poster bed, and a fireplace that is a favorite of visiting rock groups. Room service is available from the fabulous Kittichai.

The Thompson is a smoker-friendly hotel, so ask for a non-smoking room or bring your ionizer if the smell of stale cigarette smoke bothers you.
