Behind an unassuming entrance in the middle of bustling 23rd Street is one of New York's true lodging treasures: a real urban bed-and-breakfast with as personal a touch as you will find anywhere. All 14 guest rooms are spacious. Each has a king or queen bed outfitted with a supremely comfy pillow-top mattress and top-quality linens, satellite TV, a large private bathroom with thick Turkish towels, and a roomy closet. Rooms have themes based on how they are designed; there's the Rosewood Room, with '60s built-ins; the elegantly Asian Bamboo Room; and Ken's Cabin, a large, lodgelike room with cushy, well-worn leather furnishings and wonderful Americana relics. I stayed in the Victorian suite where the decor curiously included framed Victorian-era dental tools. The inn features a lovely library where the complimentary breakfast is served and where there is also an honor bar where you can make yourself a drink for cheaper than you would pay in any hotel in the city. Other perks include free high-speed Internet access in the rooms, Wi-Fi in the library, and wine and cheese served on Friday and Saturday. The only drawback is that the inn is so comfortable and accommodating you might be tempted to lounge around all day instead of getting out there and seeing the town.
