The contrast of a gleaming 21-story glass-tower luxury hotel in the midst of 19th- and early-20th-century Lower East Side low-rise tenement buildings is striking, but an accurate representation of what that neighborhood has become. From the floor-to-ceiling windows of your room, surrounded by modern amenities such as flat-panel televisions, Japanese soaking tubs in the bathrooms, and Tempur-Pedic mattresses on the beds, not only do you have incredible and totally unobstructed city views, but you can look down and spot ancient Lower East Side landmarks like the sign for the Schapiro Kosher wine factory, or the still-very-active Economy Candy store, est. 1937, or the shops of Orchard Street. You may not be close to the center of Manhattan if you stay at the Hotel on Rivington, but you will be in a dually historic and trendy location, where old-world customs and institutions coexist peacefully with the new and the supercool. The Hotel on Rivington is most definitely new and supercool but the comforts the hotel offers are timeless. Along with the aforementioned views, three-quarters of the rooms have private terraces, the option of in-room spa services, heated, tiled floors in the large bathrooms where you can enjoy your view of the city as you bathe -- which also means someone with binoculars might just have a view of you as well. Room service is provided by the hotel's ultratrendy restaurant THOR.
