Under its former British owner, this little hotel made a huge name for itself over the last 25 years in the European glossy magazines. Today, it caters less to upscale British bohemians and more to mass market travelers and families. The funfair now installed at the entrance, and rambling ponds and bridges, give it an air of whimsy. Choose from Thai thatched bungalows, studio suites, and private pool villas -- many built from salvaged rural teak homes. Family suites have bunk beds, private baths for kids, and small family dining nooks. Large porches bookend all villas from which the pounding surf can be heard. Kayaks, mountain bikes, and snorkeling gear are available to explorers but very low tides and hundreds of squishy sea cucumbers make wading an experience. The elevated pool sits alongside the (once world-famous) teak restaurant.
