Converted from the 12th-century Grands Augustins Convent, this hotel has been beautifully restored, with ribbed-vault ceilings, stained-glass windows, stone walls, terra-cotta floors, and Louis XIII furnishings. The reception desk is in a chapel, and oil paintings and watercolors decorate the public rooms. Before its transformation into a hotel in 1892, this site won a place in history by sheltering an excommunicated Martin Luther on his return from Rome. The spacious soundproof guest rooms -- two with terraces -- all have automatic alarm-call facilities. They possess a severe kind of monastic dignity, with dark-grained wooden furniture and high ceilings. Touches of luxury, however, appear in the firm, very comfortable mattresses (a lot cozier than those used by the monks of long ago) and big bathrooms. Breakfast is the only meal served.
