This may be convenient for cruise-ship passengers wanting to spend a few nights in San Juan before or after a cruise, but don't expect Old City charm. Opened in 1997, this dignified, nine-story, waterfront hotel was part of a $100-million renovation of San Juan's cruise-port facilities. With an unusual and desirable position between buildings erected by the Spanish monarchs in the 19th century and the city's busiest and most modern cruise-ship terminals, it remains a good option for cruise travelers wanting to extend their trip with a stay in San Juan. Most of the major cruise ships dock nearby. On days when cruise ships pull into port, the hotel's lobby and bars are likely to be jammed with passengers stretching their legs after a few days at sea. The modern, pastel building has iron railings and exterior detailing that convey a sense of colonial San Juan. The triangular shape of the building encircles an inner courtyard that floods light into comfortable bedrooms that otherwise lack character, feeling more like a place for business travelers, devoid of Old City character. Most of the lobby level here is devoted to a mammoth casino. Take a pass on the hotel restaurants; you are steps from SoFo (South Fortaleza street near Plaza Colón), which has some of the finest eateries in the city.
