Cast a line for trout in the pond in front in summer, twirl around the skating rink in winter, get swaddled in seaweed year-round -- and still be only a 15-minute drive from Vieux-Québec. Bushels of dollars have elevated this hotel far beyond the folksy boardinghouse that it was a half-century ago, and it has been accorded membership in the prestigious consortium The Leading Hotels of the World. For romantics, the choice has to be the Art Deco room (in the "Distinctive" suite category) with a monster tub for two beneath a fresco of a country lane. An on-site AmeriSpa with 22 treatment rooms offers massages, scrubs, and even an apple-ice-cider body wrap and maple-sugar body scrub. There's a supervised "Fun Club" play area for children with toys, videos, and a nap space. The tennis courts, alas, have been lost to the expanded man-made lake. Golfers have access to a private course 15 minutes away. Aiming to get a "5 Green Key rating" by 2008, the hotel is converting to water-saving toilets and organic detergents.
