The former Opera Hotel has gone through several ownership changes in the last few years and is now positioned as a luxury property by its Starwood parent. Situated across the street from the Mimara Museum and its trove of objets d'art, it is too bad the Westin's rooms and amenities are so hotel-generic. Guests checking into a basic room (without breakfast) are offered the chain's Heavenly brand toiletries, bed, and other amenities. However, the room and bathroom are cramped and free of anything that would remind you that you are in Croatia. The Westin has everything you might expect at this level, but the overall impression is "impersonal chain." In addition, some amenities fall short: In-room Internet access is via non-broadband dial-up and very expensive, but there is free Wi-Fi in the business center. The property itself seems well-run and staff members seem well-trained in guest services. If you need a place for a night that has a full menu of on-site amenities, the Westin is fine, but if you want a place with a little charm and flavor of its home city, there are more convenient, less expensive choices in the city.
