About a 10-minute walk from the plaza, El Paradero ("the stopping place") provides reliable, unpretentious accommodations and good service. It began in 1810 as a Spanish adobe farmhouse, and it doubled in size in 1878 when Territorial-style details were added. In 1912, Victorian touches were incorporated in the styling of its doors and windows. Recently under new ownership, it is undergoing some very fun and tasteful renovation. The newly decorated living and breakfast rooms have a festive Mexican feel, with brightly colored walls and folk art set about. Nine ground-level rooms surround a central courtyard and offer a fairly basic stay, with hardwood or brick floors and Southwestern furniture. The innkeepers will be remodeling these in the upcoming year, so be sure to ask for one of the ones they've completed. Three more luxurious upstairs rooms feature tile floors and bathrooms as well as private balconies. Some rooms have fireplaces. Two suites occupying a brick 1912 coachman's house, a railroad-era Victorian building, are elegantly decorated with period antiques and provide living rooms with fireplaces, kitchen nooks, TVs, and phones. A full gourmet breakfast and afternoon tea are served daily. A complimentary computer is available for use in the library.
