At the north end of San Juan, Roche Harbor is steeped in island history and makes a fascinating (and increasingly luxurious) getaway. The centerpiece of this resort is the historic Hotel de Haro, which was built in 1886 and overlooks the resort's gorgeous formal garden. Because the old hotel has not been renovated in recent years, its rooms are the most basic here. To fully appreciate Roche Harbor's setting, you should stay in one of the McMillin suites or one of the Quarryman Hall suites (among the finest rooms on the island), one of the Company Town cottages, or one of the carriage houses or cottages. The condominiums, although a bit dated, are good bets for families. The waterfront dining room has a view of the marina, and the deck is a great spot for a sunset cocktail. In addition to the amenities listed below, there are whale-watching cruises, sea-kayak tours, and a marina.
