Situated at the north end of San Juan, Roche Harbor is steeped in island history, with the historic Hotel de Haro, established in 1886, serving as its centerpiece. A brick driveway and manicured gardens provide the foreground for the white two-story hotel, which overlooks the marina and has porches running the length of both floors. Although the rooms in the Hotel de Haro are quite basic (all but four have shared bathrooms) and have not been updated in years, the building has loads of character (sloping floors, log walls, vintage wallpaper, a fireplace in the lobby). The condominiums, although a bit dated, are good bets for families. The best accommodations here, however, are the Company Town cottages and the four luxury McMillin suites, in a restored home adjacent to the historic hotel. These latter suites are among the finest rooms on the island. The waterfront dining room has a view of the marina, and the deck makes a great spot for a sunset cocktail. Besides the amenities listed, there are whale-watching cruises, sea-kayak tours, and a marina.
