The Art Deco Broadway Mansions just north of the Bund was originally built in 1934 as an exclusive residential hotel by the British. It was sold to the Japanese in 1937 but later housed the Foreign Correspondents' Club of China after World War II. These days, the exterior could use a touch-up, but the interiors have been transformed into a modern hotel offering spacious rooms with high ceilings, firm beds, overhead bedside reading lights, and all the expected amenities. The rooms facing Suzhou Creek are absolutely worth paying extra for, as there are few other places where you can wake up to the creek, the Bund, and Pudong outside your window. Although aspiring to be a five-star hotel with its renovations in 2007, it lacks the quality of service of its competitors in the same category.
