If you don't mind the lack of frills and services, staying right in the thick of the Nanjing Lu Pedestrian Mall doesn't come any cheaper than this. Located in the neoclassical former Shanghai Sincere Department Store, this hotel was last renovated in 2005. Rooms and furnishings have shown the standard wear and tear since then but are still adequate for a few nights' stay for those on a budget. Guests are mostly Chinese, but bilingual signage and the staff's tenuous grasp of some English terms make this a manageable option for the foreigner. The deluxe rooms facing Nanjing Lu are worth spending an extra ¥40 ($5.70/£2.85) on.
