Bencoolen is the signature backpacker hotel on a block that's best known for budget accommodations. A tiny lobby has a reception desk, bellhop, and one computer for Internet access. Upstairs, the rooms are equally small, with barely room to move around a queen-size bed, only a narrow closet for clothes, and a tiny TV hanging from the ceiling. King-size rooms have space for a small desk, while family rooms have one queen and one slightly oversize single bed. For an extra S$25 (US$16/£7) per day you can have wireless Internet access throughout the hotel. Despite the size, all rooms have been redone within the past 5 years -- major repairs have been made, walls have been repainted, and soft furnishings added, so that now colors and furnishings seem coordinated. Small bathrooms are newly tiled as well but are already beginning to show some age. The hotel has a rooftop restaurant.
