This hotel is rich in atmosphere, but doesn't have as much style as the previously recommended Clas på Hornet. Even so, it's a reliable and fine choice in every way. A charming, richly detailed, turn-of-the-20th-century hotel, the Karelia was transformed after several large-scale renovations in the 1990s. Many aspects of the building's original grandeur were retained, including the soaring Romanesque entranceway, the decorative double staircase, and the copper-capped tower. Renovations gave the rooms renewed bathrooms equipped with tub/showers. Trying to stay abreast of the times and changing Swedish tastes, the hotel has installed a rather good Thai restaurant.
