In the 18th century, this hotel facing the water was the most famous coffeehouse in the Old Town, lying just a few alleys from the Royal Palace. Sea captains, seamen, and tradesmen frequented the place. In 1819 the Merchant Society took it over and turned it into a nautical-style hotel. Today it's a comfortable and stylish hotel, decked out with dark wood, brick walls, and beautiful fabrics, although it doesn't quite match the charm and atmosphere generated by its two competitors nearby, Lady Hamilton and Victory . The three-building structure attractively combines the old and the new; rooms are furnished with a mix of modern and traditional designs. Beds are frequently renewed, and the bathrooms are excellent, with deep tubs, massaging showerheads, scales, marble floors, heated towel racks, and phones. Some suites have Jacuzzis, and top-floor accommodations open onto small balconies.
