Just beyond Lake Placid's busy Main Street, on a hill overlooking Mirror Lake, sits this classy and gorgeous inn. Dating from 1883, it maintains a very traditional upscale feel -- rustic it's not. Mahogany walls, walnut floors, and chandeliers fill the lobby and its cozy nooks. With the exception of the smallish "Cobble Hill" accommodations, standard rooms are extremely comfortable and very spacious, with an understated luxury -- there's nothing overly grand or unique about them. Many, however, boast gorgeous views of the lake and mountains -- some even have balconies. Suites are huge with graceful furnishings and touches like four-poster beds in some; they're the most elegant rooms in the town. Best of all, a renovation and expansion have given this excellent inn even more suites in buildings across the street, right on the lake. Two major pluses: The View (reviewed below) is outstanding, as is the state-of-the-art spa.
