The eponymous Mr. Clapp was ahead of his time, incorporating central heating and indoor plumbing in his 1871 manse. He also rejected the excesses of High Victorian design, stripping his home to what amounted -- at the time -- to near-minimalism. Recent restoration took 18 months and included installation of gas fireplaces and high-speed Internet in the extra-large rooms. The owner/manager is a fervent Pittsfield booster and a font of information about the local dining and cultural scenes.
