The Experience

When Four Seasons blew into town in 2001, the property quickly took the city's top luxury spot—quite a feat considering the city's crowded hotel market. Housed in the 15th to 17th floors of a downtown skyscraper, the property's hidden entrance appeals to some visitors; others hate the discreet elevator arrival. But the views of San Francisco Bay and the other downtown skyscrapers are the main draw here. Its location doesn't hurt, either: close to Union Square, Chinatown and many of the city's museums. (The Four Seasons even has its own quality art collection, if you're feeling lazy.)

The Rooms

Floor-to-ceiling windows are wonderful, but only if you have a dramatic view. So skip the Premier rooms and go for at least the Deluxe, then look out to the bay, Yerba Buena Gardens or the sparkling city lights—a perspective you can take advantage of from a spacious work desk. Large rooms start at 460 square feet, have some of the world's most comfortable beds (with custom-made mattresses and pillows) and feel more residential than corporate, with wood furniture and original artwork. Bathrooms may feel like standard Four Seasons, but no one complains about the deep soaking tubs.

The Service

For the most part impeccable, but sometimes the obsequiousness goes too far. That's not the case with the concierge, however, who is opinionated and knowledgeable—and can get you into the best restaurants in town.

The Highlights

Sports fans will love the building's vast Sports Club/LA, which is free for hotel guests and has a junior Olympic pool, full-size indoor basketball court and, for those in search of low-key pastimes, a full spa. The 24-hour business center is better than most, with a helpful staff and laptop rentals. And if you can't snag a room with a view, head to the Seasons bar, which has floor-to-ceiling windows of its own, and have a drink by the fireplace while gazing out at the lights of San Francisco. The restaurant features an open kitchen that specializes in premier cuts of meat and fresh seafood in a seasonally changing menu.
