The Experience

Technically in the area known as “Beverly Hills Adjacent,” the Four Seasons rises above the neighborhood’s apartments and condos, offering panoramic views of the city and the hills. The rectangular straw-yellow building dotted with white balconies seems more residence than hotel, since high-rise hotels so rarely feature windows that open, let alone French doors that open onto balconies. Long a favorite of visiting celebrities and industry heavies, the Four Seasons is equidistant from the designer shops of Beverly Hills and the edgier boutiques of West Hollywood, so well situated that if anyone in Los Angeles actually walked, it would be possible to stroll to one of the area’s iconic restaurants, like the Ivy or Spago.

The Rooms

Rooms in the Four Seasons tap right into the California zeitgeist. The French doors flood them with light, wafting in the soft breezes of L.A.’s legendarily seductive temperate weather, while at night views of the twinkling lights of estates in the Hollywood Hills provide a sense of Being There. Avoid the small (380-square-foot) entry-level rooms, all on the lower floors, where your view will most likely be the driveway. Aim instead for the fifth floor and above. Everywhere the decor is classic Fours Seasons: traditional, a mix of stripes and florals in subtle shades of gold, mauve, blue and green.

The Service

Except at the hotel’s entrance, which is almost always a mad river of activity overflowing with expensive cars, service at the Fours Seasons feels relaxed, the way consummate service should. Practice has given the staff the confidence that they can handle your needs. The concierges are wizards at getting reservations and tickets. Even the harried valet parkers, dashing about, their brows knit in concentration, manage to seem thrilled by your arrival.

The Highlights

The fourth-floor terraced pool area is high enough to be impervious to the city sounds coming from below, and has enough boxed shrubbery and flower beds so that it seems more garden than rooftop. And the newly redecorated blue-and-white striped cabanas have all the requisite bells and whistles, from TVs and minibars to wifi. Then head to the restaurant, typically Four Seasons formal with a good California-style menu, and take advantage of the little-noticed more casual outdoor, shrubbery-surrounded patio—it’s perfect for breakfast or lunch.
