The Experience

Relax in guest rooms furnished in soothing earth tones and appointed with natural materials such as leather walls and limestone floors. Sip martinis behind a wall of fire that lends a sense of drama to the intimate lobby bar. Immerse yourself in the soothing waters of a 50-foot heated infinity pool. (For the fourth element, fresh air, visit the fourth-floor garden where executive chef John Jackson grows organic fruits, vegetables and herbs used in the hotel’s restaurants, Vitrine and Ame.) Art lovers will find an enriching cultural experience at the attached Museum of the African Diaspora and the adjacent San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, while the Moscone Center, Yerba Buena Gardens and Union Square are all within walking distance.

The Rooms

Contemporary design and smart layout give the standard rooms an expansive feel (they start at a spacious 450 square feet). The doors dividing bathrooms from living areas can be made to disappear, yielding breathtaking views of the city. Generous 700- to 1,500-square-foot suites with state-of-the-art technological touches offer both function and fun. Business travelers will appreciate dedicated phone and fax numbers; digital desktop devices grant access to room service, concierge and anything else you might need. Book the lavish 3,200-square-foot Presidential Suite and you’ll be ready to host a board meeting or a dinner party at a zebrano-wood table for ten, get productive in a modern office/library with floor-to-ceiling windows, relax in the master bedroom with panoramic views, or venture into the adjacent butler’s pantry with full kitchen, wine cooler and Wedgewood china designed exclusively by Vera Wang.

The Service

Sophisticated service is exceptionally attentive but never cloying. From the moment you check in, an individual butler is at your beck and call, ready to provide everything, from executive assistance at noon to pampered indulgence at midnight. Tied up offsite and running late for a business meeting? Text your butler’s Blackberry and he or she will inform your client. Want to sweep someone other off their feet? Have a romantic bath of your choice drawn for you and your significant other, with luxe extras such as rose petals, decadent truffles from La Maison du Chocolate, a magnum of Krug champagne and four ounces of Osetra caviar.

The Highlights

Living up to its artful SoMA district address, the 40-story building boasts $6 million in custom artwork by international sculptors and painters including Mari-Ruth Oda, Pascle Girardin and Stefan Hoenerloh. If it’s relaxation you’re after, visit the four-star, 9,000-square-foot Remède Spa, with its array of massage, facial and body services, and special packages for athletes and brides. All wine and floral arrangements are exclusive, assuring experiences you can’t get anywhere else. When it’s time to check out your butler will gingerly pack up those bottles of wine you brought back from the side trip h/she arranged to that vineyard in Napa, and arrange for the hotel’s Bentley to chauffeur you to your next destination.
