There really isn't anything else like this in the Caribbean. Known to bird-watchers throughout the world, this center sits on 74 remote hectares (183 acres) of protected land at an elevation of 360m (1,180 ft.) in the rainforested northern mountain range of Trinidad, 15km (10 miles) north of Arima, beside Blanchisseuse Road. Hummingbirds, toucans, bellbirds, manakins, several varieties of tanagers, and the rare oilbird are all on the property. Back-to-basics accommodations are available in the lodge, in the 1908 Edwardian main house, and in the cottages on elevated ground above the main house. Even though they offer less privacy, we prefer the two rooms in the main house, which are more atmospheric and are outfitted with dark-wood antiques and two king-size beds each. Furnishings in the cottages are rather plain but comfortable. Guided tours are available on the nature center's grounds, which contain several well-maintained trails and a natural waterfall with a pool.
