This is one of the leading small hotels in the Caribbean. Now a national historic site, the inn has serious island appeal. The building was designed by an Italian architect in a Spanish motif, with French grillwork, Danish bricks, and sturdy Dutch doors. Danish and African workers completed the structure in 1829 (hence the name), and the likes of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Mikhail Baryshnikov have visited. This place stands right in the heart of town, on a hillside 3 minutes from Government House. It's a bit of a climb to the top of this multitiered structure -- there are many steps but no elevator. The hotel has a shuttle to Magens Bay Beach as well as to the restaurant at the Inn at Blackbeard's Castle. The rooms are well-designed and attractive, and most face the water. All have old-island decor, such as wood beams and stone walls, and each has a small tiled bathroom. The upper rooms are situated amid a cascade of flowering bougainvillea, overlooking a central courtyard with a miniature pool. The smallest units, in the former slave quarters, are the least comfortable. Some guest rooms are four flights up, so be duly warned if you have a problem with stairs. We always opt for one of the front bedrooms, as they're the most scenic and spacious.
