The Edson Hill Manor sits atop a long, quiet drive 2 miles from Mountain Road and has an ineffably quirky charm. The main lodge dates to the 1940s; the four carriage houses just up the hill are of newer vintage. The compound is set amid a rolling landscape of lawns, hemlocks, and maples, with a comfortable common room in the main house like a movie set for a country retreat -- tapestries, pastels, and oils adorn the walls. Most of the nine guest rooms in the main lodge have pine walls and floors, wood-burning fireplaces, Colonial maple furnishings, wingback chairs, and four-poster beds. The 16 carriage-house rooms, four to each house, are somewhat larger but lack the cozy charm of the main inn and feel a bit like motel units (really nice motel units).
