This Relais & Châteaux property is one of Vermont's finest. Set in the timeless village of Warren, the inn was built in the 1990s from the ground up following a fire that leveled a previous home; only the barn is original. Architect David Sellars created an inn that seamlessly blends modern conveniences, whimsy, and classic New England styling. The common areas fuse several styles: Colonial Revival, mission, and (if this can be called a style) Adirondack-sporting-camp. There isn't a bad room in the house; all are designed with such wit that they're more like elegant puzzles. (One great feature: The carved "in-flight" goose on the ceiling of the Mallard Room is attached to a weathervane on the roof, and it rotates to indicate wind direction.) Most units have wood-burning or gas fireplaces, and some have steam showers. Rates here are pricey, but include not only breakfast but also afternoon tea service and -- from Sunday through Thursday -- a full three-course dinner.
