The boxy, uninteresting exterior of Topnotch hides a surprisingly creative interior and upscale facility (voted one of the top resort spas in the U.S. by Condé Nast Traveler readers). The main lobby is in ski-lodge style, with lots of stone, wood, and a huge moose head on the wall; guest rooms are attractively appointed, mostly in country pine. Some units have wood-burning fireplaces; some have Jacuzzis; and third-floor rooms sport cathedral ceilings. The main attraction is the huge 35,000-square-foot spa, free for guests (nonguests pay a $50 fee). This spa has such nice touches as fireplaces in the locker rooms and a range of aerobics classes, weight training programs, and revitalizing treatments for face, skin, and body. Outdoors, you can ramble on 120 acres of grounds, doing anything from horseback riding to cross-country skiing. There also is indoor tennis. Three pools (two outdoor, one indoor) and a Jacuzzi help loosen after-ski muscles.
