Having entered its second century of operation, this colonial-style hotel is the most genteel accommodations option in the village. It's in a prime spot overlooking the Victoria Falls Bridge, within walking distance of the falls. A member of Leading Hotels of the World, it was built in 1904 in the imperial manner for Cecil Rhodes's Cape-to-Cairo railway. The hotel is all columns, arched loggias, and broad verandas, while wall-mounted hunting trophies and decorous chandeliers suggest the overstated opulence of a bygone age. The deluxe rooms (with views of the spray and bridge) and suites are definitely worth it; standard rooms are tiny. Enjoy drinks and high tea served on a generous, sweeping terrace with excellent views -- a must even if you're not staying here. A path through the gardens leads to the falls, and a 30-minute trail descends into the gorge to the river. David Livingstone enthusiasts should inquire about the excellent talks given by Russell Gammon. Service is well meaning, but it's not uncommon to wait 20 minutes for a beer, and power failures are not unheard of.
