Just 3km (1 3/4 miles) from the village, this hotel is set high on a plateau that overlooks the plains of the Zambezi National Park and is surrounded by views of unspoiled bush. Constructed on 11 levels, much like an open-plan thatched treehouse, the interiors feature plenty of ethnic touches like wall hangings and African drums. Overlooking a very productive watering hole, the balcony has been described as one of the best places in Africa to breakfast, with everything from elephant to buffalo quenching their thirst in full view. All rooms have glass doors that open onto private west-facing balconies, offering views of the bushveld sunsets; standard rooms are a bit cramped, so opt for a deluxe unit (or the privacy and space of Matetsi). Beds are draped with mosquito nets and covered in crisp white linen; bathrooms are small but have tubs and showers. Guests must be accompanied by guides when walking outside the perimeters of the resort, a reminder of how close to nature you are. Nearby, families can opt for a two-bedroom self-catering chalet at
Lokhutula Lodges (US$140-US$165/£72-£85), part of a timeshare development. This is also where you'll find
The Boma, the best place to eat in the village.
