The best lodging deal in the region is 25 miles north of Mammoth. Less than a mile from the June Mountain ski areas, the Fern Creek Lodge is a spread of simple, fully furnished cabins on the sunrise side of the Eastern High Sierra. Built in 1927, it has seen its ups and downs, but thanks to the latest owners -- the Hart family -- the year-round fishing and skiing resort is better than ever. The least expensive cabins are small, with just enough room for a bed, a table and chairs, and a bathroom. All have fully equipped kitchens, and most have fireplaces. The units are all so different, your best bet is to call and tell them what you're looking for. Rooms don't have phones, but guests may use a pay phone on the premises.
