This is a genuinely excellent and very comfortable hotel whose historical importance has been to some degree obscured behind contemporary-looking marble sheathing that was added in 1968 as part of a radical modernization. Inaugurated with pomp and circumstance in 1857 and still considered one of the finest hotels in Seville, it has hosted the monarchs of Spain and Belgium (in 1915 and 1921, respectively), Seville-born actress Penelope Cruz, and a wide assortment of Spanish and international luminaries. It occupies one side of a palm-lined plaza (Plaza Nueva) that's home to some of Seville's most upscale shops. Throughout, there's an elegant but unpretentious ambience that's established by a topnotch concierge staff. Bedrooms are plush, conservatively modern, and comfortable. In 2004, management embarked on a campaign to install some of the plushest accommodations in Seville on the uppermost floors; these rooms have views directly over the Giralda and many of the antique rooftops within the immediate neighborhood.

On-site is a richly decorated Irish pub, the Trinity. One floor above street level, the Galería serves well-prepared food from a frequently changing international menu.
