Situated alongside the Alfred Basin's working dock, in what was once the 1904 North Quay warehouse (now called Alfred Mall), this was the first hotel to open in the Waterfront and remains the most centrally located Waterfront choice. Having benefited from a much-needed refurb when they extended into their loft, adding 26 new loft units, the hotel is now the best-value option in the Waterfront (though note that it has no pool or garden). Bedrooms are spacious, each featuring a king-size bed, and warm, rich palette. Loft rooms are a steal at R1,995/$277/£143 (two of them have outdoor Jacuzzi baths), but if you're after more space, make sure you book a room on the second floor -- you pay a small premium for Table Mountain view rooms, but it's worth it to wake up to that classic vista. The in-house restaurant has a reasonably good reputation and is particularly popular for breakfast; you can dine alfresco while enjoying the excellent view of Table Mountain. The Green Dolphin, one of Cape Town's premier (but pricey) jazz venues, is in the same building, and Den Anker, one of the best Waterfront restaurants, is a short stroll away.
