The Trapp family of Sound of Music fame bought this sprawling farm high up in Stowe in 1942, just 4 years after fleeing the Nazi takeover of Austria. Descendants of Maria and Baron von Trapp continue to run this Tyrolean-flavored lodge on 2,700 mountainside acres. It's a comfortable resort hotel, though designed more for efficiency than elegance. Guest rooms are a shade or two better than run-of-the-mill hotel rooms, and most come complete with fine valley views and private balconies. Room prices are high; they offer access to nice facilities, but little else. Better value can be found elsewhere in the valley. The restaurant offers well-prepared Continental fare (Wiener schnitzel, lamb tenderloin); Sunday concerts are held in the meadow in summer.
