The Experience

Like its longtime rival the Oberoi, the Taj Mahal occupies a rarefied place in the Indian capital. But while the Oberoi may win for newness, the Taj is still the better property, and not just because of its ultracentral location (close to the city's historic Mogul core, close to the Gate of India, the country's government complex and the commercial hustle and bustle of Connaught Place). Fronted by a brilliantly illuminated pink sandstone facade, filled with an extensive collection of original Indian artifacts and surrounded by endless greenery, the Taj is a winning combination of serenity and authenticity in India's chaotic capital city.

The Rooms

Most standard rooms are essentially the same size -- and share the same drab park views -- delineated by their decor and amenities, and you'll need a deluxe business room for furniture that doesn't feel as old as the hotel. Club rooms get you the expected butlers, as well as free food and drink in the lounge, but don't offer anything extra in the rooms. Suites are really the only way to snag a more compelling view -- perhaps the city, the massive pool or the Presidential Palace -- and include far more authentic furniture and detailing, including original artwork and antiques from across India.

The Service

The details begin with the attentive chauffeur who whisks guests via Mercedes sedan – free for those staying on the Club floor -- to the hotel's entrance, to be greeted by staffers in imperial Raj-style uniforms with free-flowing mustaches. Inside, there are glasses of chilled juice in an instant and butlers to explain room details, and everyone seems to know your name within hours of arrival. In a city where most flights touch down after midnight, pollution is a constant presence and the word "crowded" has never seemed so spot-on, such details are quite welcome.

The Highlights

Like in much of Asia, Delhi's social swirl has historically taken place in its five-star hotels, and The Taj has long been a key upper-crust destination. Three of its six restaurants are particular compelling: the House of Ming, for the city's best Cantonese and Szechuan delicacies; the Grille Room, with its formal European fare and equally formal European dress code; and the Northern Indian Haveli, decorated with original Indian artwork and pottery, and serving expert kebabs. End the day in the hotel's new mod-Mogul Tejas Spa -- with its Western, East Asian and Ayurvedic treatments -- in an atmosphere of flickering candlelight and carved-wood Hindu deities.
