Located on the southeastern edges of the Lujiazui financial district and just minutes from the Science and Technology Museum and the Shanghai International Expo Center, this relatively new (2003), extremely colorful five-star hotel attracts primarily business travelers and the occasional North American tour group. Formerly a three-star hotel owned by the police department, this 27-floor building has been completely refurbished to the Renaissance brand and sports its own unique vibe, from the funky and loud orange color palette in the lobby and bar area to the tasteful mix of Chinese calligraphy and Chinese-style bedspreads in the otherwise modern and luxurious rooms. French doors open onto beautiful bathrooms, which come with separate shower and tub. But the Renaissance's attempt to distinguish itself really lies in the details, like the small gifts (handicraft grasshoppers or Chinese orchids) that greet arriving guests, and its friendly and efficient service, all of which make the hotel poised to take off as Pudong continues to develop.
